Celebrating the Unsung Heroes of Sylhet Cricket

In the world of professional and local sports, the spotlight almost always falls on the players, the match-winners, and the coaches. Yet, behind the scenes, a dedicated group of individuals works tirelessly to ensure that the field of play is always ready for action. Recognizing this essential contribution, former cricketers and prominent sports organizers in Sylhet have launched a compassionate initiative to support the ground staff of the Sylhet District Sports Association ahead of the Eid festivities.

A Gesture of Appreciation

As the holy occasion of Eid approaches, the local sports community decided to extend a helping hand to those who maintain the grounds. A total of BDT 100,000 worth of Eid gifts was distributed among the ground staff, serving as a tangible gesture of gratitude for their hard work, dedication, and long hours of service. This initiative has garnered widespread praise, sparking a conversation about the importance of valuing the support staff who keep sports facilities operational.

A Gathering of Support

The event, which was marked by a spirit of camaraderie and mutual respect, saw the presence of notable figures within the local and national sports landscape. Former Bangladesh national cricket team captain Rajin Saleh was in attendance, lending his voice and support to the cause. He was joined by Syed Fazla Elahi Obhi, an executive committee member of the Bangladesh Supreme Court Bar Association. Several key figures from the Sylhet cricket ecosystem also participated, including:

  • Kabir Ahmed, Secretary of the Sylhet First Division Cricket League
  • Khubeb Ahmed, Vice President of the Sylhet First Division Cricket League
  • Evan Chowdhury, Joint Secretary of the Sylhet First Division Cricket League
  • Rana Mia, Sylhet District Cricket Coach

Voices from the Heart

The sentiment behind the initiative was deeply emotional, reflecting the close-knit nature of the Sylhet cricket community. Syed Fazla Elahi Obhi emphasized the necessity of such recognition, stating, “Ground workers quietly play a very important role in keeping sports facilities and activities running smoothly. This initiative is our way of recognizing their contribution and sharing the joy of Eid with them.”

For Rajin Saleh, the connection to the ground staff is deeply personal. Reflecting on his own career, the former captain noted, “My cricket journey started from this very ground. Because of that, many of the ground workers feel like family to me. My connection with them is not only through cricket, but also from the heart.”

This initiative is not merely a one-time charitable act but a reflection of a broader commitment to the individuals who sustain the sport. Kabir Ahmed reaffirmed this, adding, “Since the beginning of the league, we promised to give ground workers the respect they truly deserve. This initiative is part of continuing that commitment.”

Building a Sustainable Sports Culture

The success and positive reception of this program suggest a growing awareness within the sports community that the health of a cricket league is dependent on the well-being of all its participants, from the star players to the support staff. By treating the ground crew as an integral part of the ‘cricket family,’ organizers in Sylhet are setting a commendable example for other districts across Bangladesh. As the community celebrates Eid, this initiative serves as a poignant reminder that sports, at their core, are about people, respect, and shared humanity.
