Solanki banks on Gill-Sai Sudharsan’s ‘immense appetite for run-scoring’ – Solanki Hails Gill and Sai Sudharsan’s Immense Run-Scoring Appetite Ahead of IPL Final
The Masters of the Chase: Gill and Sai Sudharsan Deliver Again
In a high-stakes encounter where Gujarat Titans (GT) were tasked with chasing down a formidable target of 215 against Rajasthan Royals (RR), the spotlight shone brightly on their marquee opening pair. Shubman Gill and B Sai Sudharsan rose to the occasion, putting together a magnificent 167-run partnership off just 77 deliveries. While Gill assumed the role of the primary enforcer, Sai Sudharsan anchor-played his way to a vital 58 off 32 balls. This clinical partnership once again proved that they possess the tactical flexibility to dismantle any bowling attack when the situation demands it.
For GT’s director of cricket, Vikram Solanki, the performance was a testament to their growth. Speaking at the post-match press conference, Solanki expressed immense satisfaction with how the partnership has flourished over the years. He emphasized that their success is not a product of luck, but rather the result of relentless preparation and an innate ability to adapt to varying conditions.
Solanki Lauds the Adaptability and Work Ethic of GT’s Pillars
“I thought all of their qualities were on display today. And it’s been a good number of years that that partnership has been flourishing,” Solanki remarked. “It is on the back of a lot of hard work. I can only imagine all of the work that Shubman has put in throughout his career to get to where he is as far as his batting is concerned. He’s an exceptional young man. And sometimes you have to realise he’s still a young man. And be playing the cricket that he is, to be batting the way he is, is just phenomenal.”
Solanki was equally effusive in his praise for Sai Sudharsan, acknowledging that while the young left-hander is earlier in his professional journey, his traditional batsmanship is highly effective. “Sai is no less so. He might be a little younger in his journey, but you can see that he takes a fine example from Shubman and understands that actually his skills are what you and I might view as batsmanship, the sort of traditional form of batting. But there is no doubt in my mind that if a situation requires them to up the run rate and the wicket actually suits them playing that way, then they can adapt. And I think that’s their finest quality, their ability to adapt, given any sort of situation, given any wicket, given any opposition. That along with the fact that they have an immense appetite for run-scoring. Good habits to have.”
A Historic IPL Partnership in Numbers
The statistical output of this tandem is rapidly elevating them into the pantheon of IPL greats. Gill and Sai Sudharsan have now amassed 2,944 runs together in the tournament since joining forces in IPL 2022, when Sudharsan first featured as a developing squad member. In the history of the league, this aggregate partnership tally is surpassed only by the legendary pairing of AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli, who compiled 3,123 runs together over ten seasons between 2011 and 2020.
Their consistency over consecutive seasons has been remarkable. Last season, Sai Sudharsan claimed the coveted Orange Cap with a staggering 759 runs, while Gill finished fourth in the charts with 650 runs. In the current IPL 2026 season, Gill has aggregated 722 runs, closely followed by Sudharsan on 710. The only batsman to have outscored them this term is the prolific Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.
Breaking Down the Strike Rates
While critics have occasionally questioned their scoring acceleration, the data highlights their complementary roles. This season, Gill has operated at a strike rate of 159.2, while Sudharsan has maintained a rate of 145.02. Interestingly, Sudharsan has been the quicker of the two during the powerplay overs, scoring at a strike rate of 139.17 compared to Gill’s 134.61, establishing a balanced platform for the middle order.
The Student and the Captain: Complementary Forces
According to Solanki, Sai Sudharsan’s rise is fueled by a rare, self-driven work ethic. He described the young batsman as a meticulous “student of the game” who thoroughly analyzes oppositions and prepares exhaustively. “There are a lot of talented people, but perhaps some don’t have the same work ethic that he does. He’s almost somebody that we have to hold back, which is a great quality,” Solanki noted, adding that managing his workload and finding time to rest remains an ongoing coaching objective.
On the other hand, Shubman Gill’s leadership and mental resilience have been exemplary. Despite the setback of being omitted from India’s T20I squad ahead of the T20 World Cup earlier in the year—despite leading the national side in the other two formats—Gill’s focus remained unwavering. Solanki praised his captain’s professional demeanor, stating that Gill’s preparation remained meticulously on point upon his arrival in the GT camp, showing the maturity needed to handle both success and disappointment.
Eyeing the Ultimate Prize in Ahmedabad
The chase on Friday required precision, and Gill delivered in spectacular fashion, compiling a masterclass of 104 off just 53 deliveries, featuring 15 boundaries and three sixes. Operating at a strike rate of 196.22, Gill proved he can accelerate effortlessly, keeping pace with the tournament’s top performers like Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who recently smashed a rapid 96 off 47 balls.
With the highly anticipated IPL 2026 final scheduled at the Gujarat Titans’ fortress in Ahmedabad, both Gill and Sai Sudharsan are within striking distance of overtaking Sooryavanshi as the tournament’s leading run-scorer. Facing a formidable Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) lineup, the Titans will once again lean heavily on their golden opening partnership to secure the championship trophy.
