Devonshire, Patel and Sharp earn New Zealand central contracts for 2026-27 seaso
A Major Transition Era for the White Ferns
New Zealand Cricket has officially announced a groundbreaking update to its national setup, confirming that Devonshire, Patel and Sharp earn New Zealand central contracts for 2026-27 seaso. This transition marks a monumental shift in the team’s composition as several legendary players prepare to step away from international duties, allowing a fresh generation of talented cricketers to lead the country forward.
With foundational pillars of the team transitioning out of the squad, the national selectors have pivoted toward developing promising young stars. The additions of Flora Devonshire, Nensi Patel, and Izzy Sharp are a testament to New Zealand’s robust domestic pathway programs, which aim to nurture top-tier talent for the global stage.
Meet the New Contracted Players
Flora Devonshire: Central Districts’ Versatile Allrounder
Flora Devonshire has rapidly ascended the ranks of New Zealand women’s cricket. A left-arm batting allrounder from Central Districts, Devonshire made her international debut in March 2025 and was subsequently named in two World Cup squads. Her swift elevation to the central contracts list is a result of her outstanding potential and dedication.
Before receiving her central contract, Devonshire spent the past year participating in NZC’s Central Players of Interest programme. This specialized pathway initiative is specifically designed to accelerate the development of high-potential talent across the country, equipping domestic standouts with the tools required for international success.
Nensi Patel: A Triumphant Return for the Spin-Bowling Sensation
Nensi Patel makes a highly anticipated return to the central contracted group, having previously held a White Ferns central contract during the 2022-23 season. Representing Northern Districts, the spin-bowling allrounder has enjoyed an incredibly encouraging start to her international career since debuting in February.
Patel’s statistics underline her elite capabilities: she has claimed 14 wickets in T20Is at an extraordinary average of 9.8 and a highly disciplined economy rate of 4.04. She also made an immediate impact in the lead-up to the Women’s T20 World Cup, returning incredible figures of 4 for 18 against Bangladesh in New Zealand’s opening warm-up match.
Izzy Sharp: Canterbury’s Right-Hand Powerhouse
Izzy Sharp is a hard-hitting right-hand batter from Timaru who has long been earmarked for international success. Sharp famously captained New Zealand at the inaugural Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup in 2023 while on her first domestic contract with Canterbury. Since then, she has become a key member of the Canterbury Magicians lineup.
During the 2025-26 Super Smash season, Sharp averaged 30 and struck at an impressive rate of 128, finishing the tournament as her team’s leading run-scorer. Like Devonshire, Sharp’s development was fast-tracked through the Central Players of Interest programme, preparing her for the international stage.
Coaching Staff Welcomes the New Signings
New Zealand head coach Ben Sawyer expressed great excitement about the unique skillsets the new contract holders bring to the national squad.
Speaking on Devonshire’s attributes, Sawyer noted: “Flora’s a clean striker with lots of power. Being left-handed she offers a point of difference as she’s able to hit to different areas of the field, and there’s the added bonus of her left-arm orthodox bowling.”
Sawyer was equally complimentary of Patel’s control with the ball: “Nensi’s consistently accurate with the ball, and she has great control over her length and pace.”
In discussing Sharp’s development, the coach drew exciting comparisons to outgoing legends: “Izzy’s batting has been building from strength to strength. She possesses similar qualities to Sophie and with Soph stepping away from international cricket soon, it’s really exciting to bring someone with Izzy’s power onto a central contract so we can keep working with her to develop those skills.”
Bidding Farewell to Legendary Icons
The inclusion of Devonshire, Patel, and Sharp comes as several legendary White Ferns stars step aside. The trio has replaced Suzie Bates, Lauren Down, and Lea Tahuhu on the contract list. Additionally, Sophie Devine, who played under a casual playing agreement last season, is absent from the newly contracted group.
Lauren Down has officially decided to call time on her international career. Meanwhile, the legendary trio of Suzie Bates, Lea Tahuhu, and Sophie Devine are set to retire following the conclusion of the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup. Their departures leave massive shoes to fill, but the incoming talent is ready to take up the mantle.

Despite the high-profile retirements, the White Ferns retain a powerful, experienced core led by captain Melie Kerr. Established international regular performers such as Izzy Gaze, Maddy Green, Brooke Halliday, Jess Kerr, Rosemary Mair, and Georgia Plimmer will provide the necessary leadership to anchor the squad. Furthermore, left-arm spinner Fran Jonas has retained her central contract after recently representing New Zealand A on their developmental tour of Sri Lanka.
