A Gesture of True Sportsmanship

In the high-stakes world of the Indian Premier League, where individual glory often takes center stage, a heartwarming story of camaraderie has emerged from the Sunrisers Hyderabad camp. Ishan Kishan, who took on the mantle of leadership for SRH during the absence of Pat Cummins, displayed exemplary character off the field by extending a helping hand to his teammate, right-arm pacer Sakib Hussain.

The Struggle Behind the Success

Sakib Hussain, who made his much-anticipated IPL debut this year, quickly became a standout performer by claiming 15 wickets across 11 games, establishing himself as a formidable emerging player. However, his journey to the top was anything but smooth. In a candid interview, the young bowler revealed the harsh financial realities he faced before his big break. Hussain shared that he struggled to afford quality equipment, often resorting to wearing cheap, roadside shoes priced between ₹200 and ₹300. These shoes were not designed for the rigors of professional cricket; they would tear quickly, offering no grip or protection, which unfortunately led to recurring ankle injuries.

“There was a time I did not have any shoes. I couldn’t even think about owning a pair of shoes that expensive. How could I wear shoes that cost Rs 12,000-15,000? The shoes bought off the roadside for Rs 200-300 wore out soon. The sole would tear. Without spikes, my foot kept slipping and my ankles got sprained many times,” Hussain recounted.

Ishan Kishan’s Timely Intervention

Upon learning of Hussain’s plight, Ishan Kishan, who himself hails from the same state of Bihar and is intimately familiar with the challenges of a humble beginning, acted immediately. Understanding the physical toll that improper footwear takes on a fast bowler, Kishan gifted the youngster 6-7 pairs of professional spike shoes, each valued between ₹12,000 and ₹15,000.

“I have 6 pairs of spikes, currently. Ishan Bhaiya got them for me. Ishan told me he will get spikes for me and I told him Adipower from Adidas. So full season, I have been playing with the spikes he only got me,” a grateful Hussain added. This act of kindness underscores the deep empathy Ishan Kishan feels for those starting their careers, reflecting his own path to becoming a powerhouse in Indian cricket.

Reflecting on a Stellar IPL 2026 Season

Beyond his mentorship off the pitch, Ishan Kishan delivered a career-best performance during the 2026 IPL season. The wicketkeeper-batter amassed a remarkable 602 runs in 15 matches at an impressive average of 40.13. His tally included six half-centuries and 32 sixes, marking the first time in his career that he has crossed the 600-run threshold in a single edition of the tournament. His form was instrumental in guiding Sunrisers Hyderabad to the playoffs.

The Playoffs Heartbreak

Despite the positive contributions of individual players, the Sunrisers Hyderabad campaign ended in disappointment during the Eliminator match against the Rajasthan Royals at Chandigarh. Chasing a massive target of 244, largely fueled by a blistering 97 off 29 balls from Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, the SRH batting lineup struggled under the mounting pressure. While Heinrich Klaasen and Nitish Reddy attempted to anchor the chase, Jofra Archer’s clinical spell of three wickets ensured SRH was bowled out for 196. Despite the early exit, the season remains a significant chapter of growth and team unity for the Hyderabad franchise, characterized by the inspiring bond between veteran leader Ishan Kishan and rising star Sakib Hussain.
