Rishabh Pant Fined for Slow Over-Rate in LSG vs CSK IPL 2026 Clash
Rishabh Pant Handed Heavy Fine After LSG’s Win Over CSK
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has fined Lucknow Super Giants captain Rishabh Pant INR 12 lakh for maintaining a slow over-rate during their IPL 2026 match against Chennai Super Kings at Ekana Stadium. Despite securing a convincing seven-wicket victory with 20 balls to spare, Pant now joins a growing list of skippers penalized this season for failing to adhere to the tournament’s strict over-rate regulations.
Slow Over-Rate Becomes Costly Habit in IPL 2026
Pant is the seventh captain this season to be fined for a slow over-rate, highlighting an ongoing issue across franchises. The official IPL statement confirmed: “Rishabh Pant, Lucknow Super Giants captain, has been fined after his side maintained a slow over-rate during Match 59 of IPL 2026 against Chennai Super Kings at the Ekana Stadium on Friday.”
Interestingly, the penalty is identical to the one imposed on Punjab Kings’ Shreyas Iyer earlier in the season — except Iyer’s cost him even more. He was first fined INR 12 lakh for a slow over-rate against Gujarat Titans, then saw that amount double to INR 24 lakh for a repeat offense against CSK.
Other captains who’ve faced financial consequences this season include Shubman Gill, Hardik Pandya, Ajinkya Rahane, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Axar Patel, and Pat Cummins. With timekeeping becoming a disciplinary priority, franchises may soon need to appoint over-rate managers to avoid further fines.
Mitchell Marsh Ignites LSG Chase
On the field, Lucknow’s win was powered by a blistering knock from Mitchell Marsh. Chasing 188 for victory, Marsh came out with full intent, dismantling the CSK bowling attack in the powerplay. He slammed 28 runs off Anshul Kamboj’s fifth over, including four sixes and a boundary.
Marsh reached his fifty in just 21 balls, laced with a boundary off Spencer Johnson. By the end of the six overs, LSG had already raced to 86, setting the foundation for a dominant chase. Although CSK struck three quick wickets for minimal runs to briefly spark a comeback, Nicholas Pooran and Mukul Choudhary稳 the ship to guide their side home without further setbacks.
CSK Bowling Effort Not Enough
Earlier, Chennai Super Kings posted a competitive 187 for 6 in their 20 overs. Kartik Sharma led the charge with a 42-ball 71, while Shivam Dube provided a late surge with an unbeaten 32 off 16 balls. For Lucknow, Akash Singh was the standout bowler, returning figures of 3 for 26 from his full quota.
Ruturaj Gaikwad Faces Uphill Battle for Playoffs
Speaking after the defeat, CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad acknowledged the mounting pressure on his side. “First challenge is to head home and then focus on the areas where we have to improve. We have to win every remaining match,” he said, reflecting on their fading playoff chances.
The loss has pushed Chennai down to sixth place on the points table. To stay alive in the race, the five-time champions must win both of their upcoming matches — against Sunrisers Hyderabad at home and a tricky away fixture against Gujarat Titans.
Even then, their qualification hinges on other results. They’ll need Punjab Kings or Rajasthan Royals to lose at least one of their remaining games to stand a chance.
Slow Over Fines: A League-Wide Issue
The repeated over-rate penalties suggest a systemic challenge in managing field settings, reviews, and bowling changes under pressure. As the IPL continues to emphasize pace of play, expect stricter scrutiny — and potentially harsher punishments — in future seasons.
For now, Rishabh Pant and his teammates can celebrate a win, but only after paying a steep financial price for dawdling on the field.
