Tendulkar: Sooryavanshi is ‘truly special’ – Sachin’s Warning
The emergence of young cricketing prodigies is a time-honored tradition in Indian cricket, but rarely has a player captured the collective imagination of the global cricket community as rapidly as Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. At just 15 years old, the left-handed sensation has redefined what is possible in modern T20 cricket. His record-breaking exploits in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season have not only earned him accolades from fans but have also drawn the attention of the game’s greatest legends. Most notably, the Master Blaster himself, Sachin Tendulkar, has weighed in on the youngster’s spectacular rise.
During a recent event in Mumbai, where Tendulkar was crowned the best men’s international batter of the 21st century at the prestigious Cricinfo Honours, the legendary batsman spoke at length about the teenage prodigy. Tendulkar did not hide his admiration, making it clear that Tendulkar: Sooryavanshi is ‘truly special’ and possesses a rare gift that must be carefully nurtured rather than heavily altered.
The Historic IPL 2026 Campaign
To understand the sheer magnitude of the hype surrounding Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, one only needs to look at his statistics from the IPL 2026 season. Playing for the Rajasthan Royals, the 15-year-old put on a batting masterclass that left veteran bowlers searching for answers. Sooryavanshi accumulated a staggering 776 runs over the course of the tournament, doing so at an astonishing strike rate of 237.31.
What made his campaign even more historic was his fearless approach to boundary-hitting. Sooryavanshi smashed a record-breaking 72 sixes during the tournament, comfortably eclipsing the previous single-season record of 59 sixes held by the legendary West Indian powerhouse, Chris Gayle. To break a record held by the “Universe Boss” at such a tender age is a testament to the young player’s immense power and timing.
A Master’s Eye: Analyzing the Technique
While many modern power-hitters rely on brute force, Sachin Tendulkar was quick to point out that Sooryavanshi’s success is built on genuine batting class and technical elegance. Having watched the youngster bat, Tendulkar highlighted his incredible wrist work as a defining characteristic of his style.
“Everyone is talking about Sooryavanshi, and I watched him bat – he was magnificent,” Tendulkar remarked. “I mean he is something truly special. And not just the ability to hit the ball, but what also fascinated me was the wrist work that he has. To be able to play in all directions of the ground, you need good wrist work. And he is not slogging the ball. He is just picking the line and length earlier than the rest of the guys and he is able to clear the rope comfortably.”
This ability to read the bowler’s intentions early allows Sooryavanshi to get into perfect positions, making his boundary-hitting look almost effortless. Instead of relying purely on physical strength, the young left-hander utilizes his wrists to manipulate the field, a trait that has drawn comparisons to some of the finest players in cricket history.
Protecting the Natural Instincts of a Prodigy
One of the most critical warnings Tendulkar issued was regarding the coaching and management of such a young talent. With extreme hype comes the temptation for coaches and analysts to dissect and modify a player’s natural game. Tendulkar strongly advised against this, urging stakeholders to let Sooryavanshi play his natural game without unnecessary interference.
“He’s kind of a player who looks very confident, very, very sure of what he wants to do and I would not want to play around with his natural instincts,” Tendulkar explained. He emphasized that over-complicating things for a young mind can do more harm than good. “The way he sees the ball and the way he responds to that, if that signal is interrupted – if you put a lot of hurdles in between that by telling him multiple things – that’s where the real challenge would be. I would give him the freedom to go out and bat the way he does. Along with time, he will learn to deal with other challenges of the game.”
The Path to Test Cricket: Patience is Key
Naturally, Sooryavanshi’s incredible white-ball success has sparked conversations about his potential transition to the longest format of the game. Tendulkar acknowledged that everyone, including himself, would love to see the teenager pull on the whites for India in Test cricket at some stage. However, he strongly cautioned against rushing this transition.
According to Tendulkar, Test cricket requires a completely different level of mental and technical resilience, which comes with age and experience. “In Test cricket, along with age, he will learn how to deal with various challenges,” Tendulkar said. He stressed the importance of developing a “solution-oriented mindset” to handle the constant questions posed by red-ball bowlers. “Problems are always going to be there. Problems will be there till the last day of your career, till the last ball you face. The bowler is asking a question every ball. Now, what solutions do you find?”
Shielding the Youth from Constant Pressure
Ultimately, Tendulkar’s message was one of support, protection, and patience. In an era dominated by intense media scrutiny and social media pressure, a 15-year-old star can easily find themselves overwhelmed. Tendulkar urged the public and the media to simply enjoy Sooryavanshi’s journey rather than burdening him with expectations or demanding his inclusion in various national squads.
“An exciting talent needs encouragement. And if he’s doing well, then we need to encourage and support him and enjoy above all and not put pressure on him constantly,” Tendulkar concluded. “Leave that to the guys [selectors] who are responsible for that.” By allowing the selectors to do their job and letting Sooryavanshi play freely, India can ensure that this truly special talent achieves his full potential on the world stage.
